Literary Character Challenge

Hello Simmers,

This challenge is one that has been navigating simblrs. Created by volcano-pasta.

I was not technically “tagged” for this, but I saw it on hagsims and she did say she tagged everyone that would like to do it, so I jumped right in. I mean… why not? I like literature, but more the idea of creating an entire world outside of our reality than actually the act of reading the story… I’m just lazy. That’s the truth.

Another truth is I did read all of the Jane Austen novels, even the ones less popular and I have re-read Pride and Prejudice I don’t know how many times, but… I am not creating a character from Pride and Prejudice. Ha! Had you there for a sec… my favorite story of Jane Austen is “Persuasion” and after thinking really hard about which character I wanted to re-create in the sims, I came to the conclusion that I do love Anne Elliot.

Anne is the protagonist of the story, and she is completely different from most of the heroines in Jane Austen’s novels.

When I was young (hey I will post the pic, I’m just giving you some background story on it) I used to think Elizabeth was a good heroine because she allowed herself to change her opinion of Darcy despite being so head strong. I still think that is an admirable quality in a young woman, but now that I’m older, I just love the way Anne’s character shows women that we are not all supposed to be AMAZON women in order to be brave and heroic in our lives. We don’t have to say no to marriage; beat up men; and we don’t have to stop being mothers in order to fully appreciate ourselves as individuals with equal rights to men.

No. We can be weak to influence, as long as it is because we respect the opinions of those that matter to us. We can be devoted to our family and those we love selflessly, and still be able to make decisions that will go against what is expected of us. Humans have many different aspects within their personality and women don’t have to be on either side of the spectrum to be labeled one way or the other – brave, or weak. We can be both. And that is damn fine…

Here is Anne Elliot

โ€œShe understood him. He could not forgive her,-but he could not be unfeeling. Though condemning her for the past, and considering it with high and unrest resentment, though perfectly careless of her, and though becoming attached to another, still he could not see her suffer, without the desire of giving her relief. It was a remainder of former sentiment; it was an impulse of pure, though unacknowledged friendship; it was a proof of his own warm and amiable heart, which she could not contemplate without emotions so compounded of pleasure and pain, that she knew not which prevailed.โ€ – Jane Austen Persuasion

I’m going to follow the same plan as flora (hagsims) and tag everyone that would like to do this challenge. Just remember to tag the creator of the challenge and link to his tumblr.
